Optimally, it seems one would like to capture both the original title's aspect ratio as filmed and the DVD stored ratio. Is there a way / plan to capture the DVD stored aspect ratio when covers state Widescreen but then are actually Letterboxed / Standard-screen / 1.33:1 releases? Seems what we really care about in a DVD database is what the player is told and thus the stored ratio. As such, only Pan-and-Scan gets the aspect ratio label of 1.33:1. Your instructions here and in the Wiki seem to imply to translate a cover-listed aspect of Widescreen, if not labeled otherwise, to 1.85:1 and not the stored or as-processed-on-the-disk aspect ratio of 1.33:1 when stored as Letterbox. Players cannot automatically get around this because they are told the disc aspect ratio is 1.33:1, not Widescreen. Too often now finding titles listed on the cover as Widescreen, in the database as 1.85:1 or "wider", but then the DVD stored format is Letterboxed (that is, 1.33:1 format with bars). Wish to determine, when looking up a UPC, if the disk is STORED as true Widescreen (anamorphic if needed) versus Full Screen. Running into the problem more and more with poorly labeled covers and thus inconsistency in the database. The main thing being, "edition" should be blank if all of the following is true: - there is no edition marked on the box front - it is the standard version - you are not aware of any other editions (ie, director's cut, unrated, etc.) 2) "Unrated Edition - Full Screen", but only if there are "full screen" AND "widescreen" versions of the "unrated" edition. For example, "Star Trek" (2009) only comes in widescreen, so unless the box states "special edition" or similar, you would leave the edition blank. 1) if an edition is not explicitly marked, then IMO it should be left blank - unless you know of other editions of the film. If the movie itself is widescreen but is letterboxed in a 4x3 frame, you still enter the aspect with widescreen ratio. There is an aspect ratio field to select or enter whatever it is. ![]() We do not have a place to identify "letterbox" vs "anamorphic". 'Unrated Edition') ? I searched the site but couldn't find anything on this topic besides the contribution wiki and a feature request from 2008, so I aplogize if this has already been covered. 1) Is it ok to use "Fullscreen Edition", etc for DVDs that don't explicitly specify an edition on the DVD box but only lists that info in the information box on the bottom? 2) If the answer to #1 is 'yes', then what should be used if the DVD already specifies an edition (e.g. I read in the contribution wiki that this information could be put in the Edition field. Is there an official guideline on how to specify if a DVD is fullscreen, letterbox or anamorphic widescreen? For DVDs with an aspect ratio of 4:3, fullscreen can be inferred - but for other aspect ratios, the DVD could be either letterbox or anamorphic widescreen.
